Barnsley Academy is part of United Learning, a successful national group of academies and independent schools. Our schools share a mission to bring out ‘the best in everyone’ and to improve the life chances of the children and young people in their care.

Our developing Yorkshire cluster comprises Barnsley, Sheffield Springs and Sheffield Park Academies.  Our cluster model enables high quality, bespoke school improvement and wider opportunities for both staff and students to work collaboratively.  Within this each school retains its own individual identity and direction.

Barnsley Academy is a good school (Ofsted 2020) serving a proud and vibrant Yorkshire community.  The Academy has been on a significant journey of improvement over the last 6 years, supported by United Learning Trust.  The Academy’s leaders have grown its educational success, built the support of parents, and created a school with a strong curriculum, good teaching and effective pupil support and which serves its local area with distinction.  The Academy has the confidence of its community – it is now oversubscribed in Year 7 and full in other year groups, with around 900 pupils on roll.

The Academy is housed in a modern, state of the art building and plays a vital part in its community. It promotes the key values of respect, tolerance and diversity, essential to ensuring that young people can thrive and have high aspirations.

Barnsley is located within an attractive green belt region that extends into the borough and wider surrounding counties, with rural landscape features, greenfield areas and a wide range of outdoor facilities including the River Dearne valley, Worsbrough Mill Park and reservoir; and Wentworth Castle.

This is an excellent opportunity for a leader looking to combine the autonomy of running their own school with the benefit of working within a successful cluster and as part of a national group.  United Learning prioritises collaboration, values shared practice and provides high-quality professional development.

As Principal, you will demonstrate a clear commitment to the school and its community. You will model outstanding leadership and set high expectations for students and staff. Your professionalism, expertise and enthusiasm for education will be evident each and every day, in all that you do.

If you are looking for an exciting, challenging and highly rewarding role within a Group that offers a strong commitment to professional development, and if you have an unshakeable commitment to improving the lives of young people, we encourage you to visit us.

Barnsley Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.

About Barnsley Academy

Barnsley Academy is a secondary school and sixth form located in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.

Barnsley Academy is a 11-18 Mixed Comprehensive Serving the Kendray and Worsbrough communities of Barnsley, South Yorkshire Barnsley Academy opened in September 2006, by the summer of 2007 we had achieved the fourth most improved progress of all schools in Yorkshire. We moved into our £28m new building in March 2009.

Our Ethos and Values
The best schools are underpinned by an ethos, behaviour and tradition that are understood, respected and valued by everyone across the school community. That is why we place a great emphasis on being a values-led organisation with an ethos established to bring hope and aspiration to the communities we serve in our schools. Our values act as a yardstick for how we behave, interact with each other and deliver our mission.

During the first half of 2012, our staff, students and governors were consulted on refreshing our values; to identify the concepts, attributes and behaviours that exemplify what it genuinely means to bring out the best in everyone.

These values need to be as clear and as applicable to our highest performing schools as they are to those that are on the road to becoming outstanding. Their currency and validity is determined by how we behave as individuals, as schools and as an organisation.
