About Immanuel College

Immanuel College, an Independent school for boys and girls aged 4-18 years, established in 1990 to educate Modern Orthodox Jewish children in a caring environment of academic excellence, supportive pastoral care and inspiring Jewish life and learning.

Chief Rabbi Lord Immanuel Jakobovits z’’l founded us to fulfil his vision of a school giving its pupils a first-class education connecting Jewish and secular wisdom, teaching boys and girls equally, encouraging questioning and independent thought. Our aim is integrated personalities whose Jewish identity is knowledgeable, secure and proud. We encourage self-esteem, care for others, high achievement, and exemplary citizenship in this complex world. Lady Amelie Jakobovits z’’l on one of her visits to us called Immanuel College ‘a great blessing for Anglo-Jewry.’

Our academic, social and sporting lives are far more successful and full than our year groups of 60 to 70 students could be expected to produce. The elite HMC organisation of Independent schools awarded us membership in 2010, while the Sutton Trust placed Immanuel in the top 3% of schools nationally for students gaining admission to the most competitive research-led universities, the Russell Group. Recent academic innovations have included considerable growth in Further Mathematics, Economics, Engineering and the Sciences. A deep, broad and thought-provoking Jewish education, including life-changing whole-year-group trips to Israel and Poland, is offered by formal educators in the Jewish Studies, Modern and Biblical Hebrew Departments. They work with dynamic informal educators based in the Atar-Zwillenberg Beit HaKnesset and the Rabbi Maurice Lew Beit HaMidrash to encourage informed and joyful love of Judaism and of Israel. Immanuel also enjoys particular excellence in the visual arts, mounting to professional gallery standard the annual Gottlieb Art Exhibition, a tradition preserved from Carmel College. There is continuous impressive activity in the Performing Arts, and teams in tennis, football, basketball and netball often win against much larger schools in Jewish and local leagues.
