Teachers Job Vacancies – What Are The Alternatives To PGCE Courses?

Teachers job vacancies are for everyone with a teaching qualification, but the well-known Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is not the only way in which these necessary qualifications can be obtained. What are the recognised alternatives to the PGCE route into teaching and who can benefit from them?

One way to get a qualification for teaching jobs is the SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) course. This is a yearlong course that is completely hands on. You will be working within a classroom environment in either a primary or secondary school, and at the end of the year, you will receive your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This is not a free way to learn, as there are fees payable, but if you specialise in either maths of science there are bursaries available. Another way into teaching is the Schools Direct programme. This is similar to the SCITT course, but the big difference is that you will be guaranteed one of the teaching vacancies at the school when you finish your course. This is, of course, dependent on your passing the Schools Direct initiative. Schools Direct also has the bonus of those on the course being paid a salary. For those who are keen to try a challenge, the final route into teaching is Teach First. Again, this is similar to SCITT and Schools Direct, but the schools chosen to participate are those that are struggling. You will receive your QTS and leadership training with this option.
